How to get access to the ATO

If you operate any business or organisation that is any structure other than a sole trader, you will need a myGovID to access any government web site.

If you’re are a sole trader, you will need a MyGov app (different to MyGovID).  See here: https://my.gov.au/en/about/help/mygov-app

The first person to register and link their MyGovID to the organisation will be the Partner, Trustee, Director or on the board of directors of an incorporated entity. Additionally, you need to be named as one of the Principle Authorities connected to the entity in the Australian Business Register. (https://www.abr.gov.au/).

This is the person responsible for the business and must be the first person to set up access to Online services for business. If you’re not sure what role you have, see Get started. This person can then grant others access when they will not be the primary user.

Step 1: Set up your Digital ID (myGovID)

Download the myGovID app (this is different to myGov) on your mobile phone, available from the App Store or Google and follow these instructions on how to set up your myGovID.

Choose your identity strength:

    • A Strong myGovID – by verifying your Australian passport and either birth certificate, citizenship certificate, driver licence or Medicare card.

    • A Standard myGovID – by verifying 2 Australian identity documents. With a Standard myGovID you will need to contact the ATO to complete Step 2.

Note: myGovID is unique to you, using your personal information – you cannot share it with others.

Step 2: Link your myGovID to your ABN

You’ll need to link your myGovID to your Australian business number (ABN) using Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).

https://authorisationmanager.gov.au/

If you have a Strong myGovID go to RAM and log in. Select Link your business and follow the prompts.

To link online:

    1. Log in to RAMExternal linkExternal link
    2. Select Link my business – you’ll be redirected to the ATO to find your business or businesses
    3. Add your personal postal or residential address (as held by the ATO) and select Continue
    4. Select the business or businesses you want to link and select Continue – if you can’t find your business, check and update your ABR details
    5. Enter an email address (this can be different to the one used to set up your Digital Identity) and select Send email to receive a verification code
    6. Enter the verification code and select Verify and Continue
    7. View the summary of the selected business or businesses and select the checkbox to declare you understand and accept, then select Submit
    8. A message will display confirming your business is successfully linked – then select Continue.

To link by phone

  1. Phone 1300 287 539 and select option 3 to complete a proof of identity check.
  2. Checks will be completed to confirm your association to the business
  3. Once confirmed, you’ll receive an email with an authorisation code and summary of the authorisation request
  4. Log in to RAM to accept the request and complete the link.

Once linked, you’ll be authorised in RAM to act on behalf of the business and can set up authorisations for others to act on behalf of the business.

Step 3: Log in to Online services for business

Use your myGovID to log in to ATO Online services for business.
